Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for?(MaShang)
In my opinion, the reason why Wikipedia has so many users and high popularity in the world and many people as well as groups have made contributions to it is that it has more special features than other websites of the same type. I would like to list a few of them for explanation.
"We are not for sale."
Wikipedia is run by a non-profit organization. The sources of funding for its website maintenance are crowdfunding, donations, etc. Moreover, it has strict control over entries that are commercial and promotional, so there are no advertisements on Wikipedia. Its founder Wales said, “Once we run advertisements, we can expect a large number of people to stop making contribution to entries or articles. Imagine how our credibility will be affected if readers open Wikipedia’s article on “coffee” and the information they can find first is the link to Starbucks. What kind of influence might advertisers or advertisement sellers have on our content? Even a perception of bias in favor of those who “pay the bill” could be highly problematic.” Wikipedia knows its own ideas and purposes, and ensures that its words and deeds are in good faith with its ideas. When this kind of cultural idea is conveyed to people, people can have the motivation and get touched so they would like to join in this kind of activity.
"We speak Banyumasan dialect."
Wikipedia has more than 290 language versions of entries, which is bound to attract many people. People are not subject to language barriers and can choose what they want to look up and edit according to their language.
"We are merely fact collectors"
As a necessary tool for many people to work and study, Wikipedia tries its best to increase its credibility. It requires that all important arguments in the article must indicate their verifiable sources, and all editors must practice the principle of “neutral”. Reliable sources make it attractive to more people for reference, and also make many people continue to struggle for adding” reliable and perfect entries".
Wikipedia has many advantages and certainly also many problems, but these problems will also drive Wikipedia’s staff to work more cooperatively together to fulfill the great mission--“Pass all the knowledge in the world to everyone on this planet in local languages”.
