How important is it to be Civil Online on the Internet?

In the 1960s and '70s, the term "Internet" was first coined.
1989 when the private sector began to use the Internet
1993 when browser mosaic was released and users began to explode.
T
he history of the Internet is really short. In particular, the spread of personal computers and high-speed Internet has been fast in Korea since the late 1990. It's only been a little over 20 years since ordinary citizens started using the Internet. But the Internet has begun to become deeply involved in human life faster than any other civilization. Now you can't even imagine life without computers, the Internet and mobile devices.

There is the term "cultural lag." Because the rate of variation between material culture and non-material culture is different, the difference causes social problems. The Internet is a material culture brought about by the advancement of science and technology. And it is a non-material culture that people on the Internet have appropriate manners, institutions and values. It has been only 20 years since ordinary citizens started using the Internet, and it is not yet fully available to people all over the world. Internet etiquette, institutions, and values are now in the process of being created. And these cultures must continue to develop over time, in keeping with the science and the material culture that are developing.

What are the manners we should observe on the Internet? We often seem to forget that in the Internet space we are the citizen who should be courteous. In a space where human external conditions are not disclosed, we are free, but we should use that freedom responsibly for each other's rights. Even an anonymous space you should not forget your identity, rights and duties as a citizen. We must not slander a person or harm the other's copyright.

As I wrote this article, I wondered, "Can our manners, values and institutions keep up with the pace of the development of technology?" I think we, as people who learn sociology, are obliged to contribute to society to reduce cultural lag. What efforts can we make to reduce the cultural lag?
