Can we trust Wikipedia? (mashang)
In my opinion, Wikipedia is the most credible online encyclopedia in the world at present. I think the reason for this is mainly due to the three principles proposed by Wikipedia, verifiability, non-original research and neutral.
“Verifiability” is one of the three core guidelines of Wikipedia. The basic requirement of Wikipedia’s content is that “the contents written in Wikipedia should be able to be verified by readers in reliable sources”. This means that editors should rely on reliable, third-party and open sources when adding entries; otherwise the content may be removed.
“Non-original research” means that Wikipedia cannot publish personal original views and original research. This is not where to show personal views, experiences or arguments. This means that all Wikipedia’s contents should be supported by published reliable sources.
“Neutral”: When there are multiple or conflicting views on the same subject, each of them should be expressed equally. It is not allowed to put too much emphasis on a certain point of view to become “truth”.
These three guidelines jointly establish the contents’ types and quality that can be accepted by Wikipedia’s entries, ensuring the credibility of Wikipedia.
