#1. What do I know about Wikipedia and what do I want to learn about it?
A decade ago, Jimmy
wales and his community found “Wikipedia”. Wikipedia is a “collaborative
community” that the free sharing of one's own knowledge within a minimum of
norms. And now, people all over the world find new information and share
it with Wikipedia.
When I was a child,
there were thick encyclopedias at my house. With the advent of Wikipedia
as technology development and digital universalization, we no longer have to
spend space and time searching for paper and finding a place to store them.
You can even discuss one problem in several hundred languages. People with
diverse cultural knowledge can communicate in one place. This will present
various approaches to one problem. I believe this collective intelligence will give
people the opportunity to be equal to their knowledge.
Questions about Wikipedia and the answer I found.
1.
Where does Wikipedia's server
fund come from?
When I first met Wikipedia, I wondered that
no banner ads or pop-ups appeared. So I wondered where the server cost of
storing this enormous information comes from.
Wikipedia is run by a non-profit foundation
called Wikimedia, and it does not post any ads to adhere to the principles of
non-profit operations. The operating expenses are supported by donations from
people. Wikipedia has more than 90 servers in three places. And these are
managed online by volunteers. And according to Jimmy one of Wikipedia founder,
it costs only the cost of the line and single management staff. The power of
collective intelligence is amazing! Even on December 3, 2014, a donation of
US$2,526,603 was collected in just one day.

2.
Why isn't Wikipedia
contaminated with false information?
Now that there's more false information,
how does Wikipedia solve this?
According to IBM researchers Martin Wattenberg
and Fernanda Viegas, the results of tracking controversial topics such as
abortion and Islam indicate that if controversial content is posted or deleted
maliciously, it can be restored within two minutes. by other anonymous
volunteers As a result, they are filled with content that reflects all of their
positions. It is said that the average number of corrections for the
many-discussed articles is more than 1000 times. It seems that some knowledge
seems to indicate that it can be fluid.
My discussion point :
How do we deal
with intellectual alienation from digital civilization?
A rapidly growing
society like Korea has a wide gap between generations. As such, the more the
technology is developed, the more disadvantage it will suffer. Sometimes it is
difficult for people who do not know how to use a smartphone to get
administrative help. I think the same is true of the approach of knowledge. Can we solve this problem through the collective intelligence of Wikipedia?
